Preserving the Names

"Allah has ninety-nine names. Whoever preserves them will enter Paradise."

— Sahih al-Bukhari [1]

The word translated as "preserves" (ahsaha) carries layers of meaning. It does not simply mean to memorize a list. The scholars explain that it means to learn them, to understand what each one means, and to live in light of them. When you learn that He is Ar-Rahman, you begin to see mercy everywhere. When you learn that He is Al-Wakeel, you stop carrying burdens that were never yours to carry.

These names are not abstract theology. There is no higher knowledge than knowing the One who made you. Every fear, every hope, every need you have corresponds to a name of Allah ﷺ. The one who knows these names does not merely believe in God. They know Him. And that knowledge changes everything.

Below, the ninety-nine names are arranged in eight thematic groups. Use the tabs to explore each group. Tap any card to read a brief reflection. Take your time. There is no rush. Start with one name. Sit with it. Let it change how you see your day before you move to the next.

Group 01

Names of Mercy & Forgiveness

These names reveal the heart of your relationship with Allah ﷺ. The first thing He chose to tell you about Himself is that He is All-Merciful. Every surah of the Quran, except one, opens with these two names. His mercy is not a footnote. It is the headline.

الرحمن
Ar-Rahman
The Most Merciful

This mercy is vast, all-encompassing, and extends to every creature regardless of whether they believe. The rain that falls, the air you breathe, the food on your table: all of it is Ar-Rahman at work. You were wrapped in His mercy before you ever chose to turn to Him.

الرحيم
Ar-Raheem
The Especially Merciful

You turned to Him once, maybe hesitantly, maybe in desperation, and something shifted. That was Ar-Raheem. Where Ar-Rahman blankets all creation, Ar-Raheem is the special, intimate mercy reserved for the believers. It guides you, forgives you, and draws you closer. When you turn to Him sincerely, this is the mercy that meets you.

الغفار
Al-Ghaffar
The Perpetual Forgiver

You came back to the same sin. Again. And the shame tells you not to bother asking anymore. Al-Ghaffar is the answer to that shame. He does not forgive once and then stop. He forgives again and again and again. No matter how many times you fall, this name tells you: come back. The door is still open. It is always open.

الغفور
Al-Ghafoor
The Most Forgiving

Al-Ghaffar forgives again and again. Al-Ghafoor forgives so deeply that the sin is buried. He does not merely overlook it. He covers it, conceals it, and removes its trace from your record. His forgiveness is complete, leaving no stain behind.

التواب
At-Tawwab
The Acceptor of Repentance

The urge you feel to seek forgiveness? That itself is At-Tawwab already at work in your heart. He does not just wait for you to repent. He turns toward you first, inspiring the desire to return, then accepts your return when you do.

العفو
Al-'Afuw
The Pardoner

Al-Ghafoor (the Most Forgiving) forgives. Al-'Afuw (the Pardoner) erases. The slate is not just cleaned. It is made new. This is the name the Prophet ﷺ taught Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to call upon in the last ten nights of Ramadan.[2]

الرؤوف
Ar-Ra'uf
The Most Kind

You have felt this before you knew its name. The moment a burden suddenly felt lighter, the night that was somehow bearable. Ar-Ra'uf is the gentleness of Allah ﷺ toward His servants, a tenderness that goes beyond mercy. He knows your limits better than you do, and His kindness meets you exactly where you are.

الودود
Al-Wadud
The Most Loving

When you feel love for Him, know that His love for you came first. Al-Wadud is not merely capable of love. He is the source of all love, the one whose love is active and continuous. He loves to forgive, loves the one who repents, and places love between hearts.

الوهاب
Al-Wahhab
The Bestower

Your heartbeat. Your faith. The people who showed up when you needed them. None of it was earned, and none of it was owed. Al-Wahhab gives without being asked, without conditions, and without expecting anything in return. His generosity is not a transaction. It is His nature.

الحليم
Al-Haleem
The Forbearing

He sees your disobedience and does not rush to punish. He sees your ingratitude and still provides. Al-Haleem is the name that explains why the sky does not fall on us when we sin. He gives you time, space, and opportunity to return.

الكريم
Al-Kareem
The Most Generous

His generosity is unlike any other. He gives more than you ask for, forgives more than you deserve, and honors you even when you have not earned it. Al-Kareem does not give because you are worthy. He gives because giving is who He is.

اللطيف
Al-Lateef
The Subtle

He works in ways you cannot perceive. The closed door that saved you. The delay that protected you. The pain that redirected you. Al-Lateef is the name you understand in hindsight, when you look back and see that His kindness was operating all along, beneath the surface.

البر
Al-Barr
The Source of Goodness

The unexpected kindness from a stranger. The beauty that stops you mid-step. Every good thing traces back to Him. Al-Barr is the source of all kindness, all goodness, all righteousness. You have been witnessing this name your entire life.

الشكور
Ash-Shakoor
The Most Appreciative

He appreciates even the smallest act of worship. A sincere du'a, a quiet charity, a moment of patience. Ash-Shakoor multiplies your small deeds into mountains of reward. You give a little; He returns abundantly. You take one step toward Him; He comes running toward you.[3]

Reflection

Which of these names do you need most right now? If you are burdened by past mistakes, sit with Al-Ghaffar, Al-'Afuw, and At-Tawwab. If you feel distant from Allah ﷺ, sit with Al-Wadud and Ar-Ra'uf. The mercy of Allah is not a concept. It is an experience waiting for you.

He brings low whom He wills. Al-Khafid humbles the arrogant, lowers the oppressor, and reduces the inflated. This name is a warning against pride and a comfort for the humble: the One who lowers is the same One who raises.

الرافع
Ar-Rafi'
The Exalter

He elevates whom He wills in rank, status, and nearness to Him. Ar-Rafi' raises the humble, the sincere, and those who lower themselves before Him. The path to being raised by Him is simple: lower yourself before Him first.

المقدم
Al-Muqaddim
The Expediter

His timing is not your timing, but His timing is always perfect. Al-Muqaddim brings forward whom He wills and advances what He wills, accelerating the success, the guidance, and the relief of some according to His wisdom.

المؤخر
Al-Mu'akhkhir
The Delayer

Delay is not denial. When something you desperately want does not arrive on your schedule, it is not because He forgot. Al-Mu'akhkhir holds back what He wills, and His timing serves a purpose yours cannot see. One day you will understand why you had to wait.

الحي
Al-Hayy
The Ever-Living

Three in the morning. You are awake and the world is asleep. But Al-Hayy is alive, awake, and listening. His life has no beginning and no end. He never sleeps, never tires, and never dies. Every living thing derives its life from Him.

القيوم
Al-Qayyum
The Self-Sustaining

He sustains Himself and sustains all of creation. Al-Qayyum needs no support, no fuel, no rest. He maintains every atom in existence at every moment. If He withdrew His sustaining for an instant, everything would collapse. Ayat al-Kursi pairs Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyum together because they are the foundation of all His other attributes.

القادر
Al-Qaadir
The All-Powerful

He has complete power over all things. Al-Qaadir can do anything He wills, and nothing can prevent His decree. When you face something that seems impossible, remember: the One you are asking is Al-Qaadir. Nothing is beyond His ability.

الباقي
Al-Baqi
The Everlasting

He remains forever. Al-Baqi is the one whose existence has no end. Everything you see will pass away, but He endures. When you invest in your relationship with Al-Baqi, you are investing in the only thing that truly lasts.

الوارث
Al-Warith
The Inheritor

When all of creation perishes, He inherits everything. Al-Warith is the ultimate owner of all that exists. Your possessions, your achievements, your legacy: all of it returns to Him. This name teaches you to hold the dunya lightly, because none of it is truly yours.

الصبور
As-Saboor
The Most Patient

You disobeyed, and He still provided. You forgot, and He still guided. You turned away, and He still waited. As-Saboor's patience is beyond comprehension. He does not rush to punish. His patience is an ocean, and your lifetime is barely a drop in it.

Reflection

Al-Awwal and Al-Akhir. The First and The Last. If He was there before your problem existed and will be there after it is forgotten, then your problem is temporary and your Lord is eternal. Anchor yourself to what lasts.

What Now?

You have read all ninety-nine names. That is a beginning, not an end. Pick one name. Sit with it for a week. Learn its Arabic. Understand its meaning. Notice it in your daily life. Make du'a using it. Then move to the next. This is what it means to preserve the names: not to rush through them, but to let each one settle into your heart until it changes how you see the world.

Barakah Stack

Learn one name deeply (base layer). Make du'a using it by name (layer). Notice it in your life throughout the day (layer). Teach it to someone else (layer). Move to the next name and repeat (layer). Over time, your understanding of Allah ﷺ transforms from abstract belief into living, breathing knowledge. Stacked.

Now Speak to Him

You just spent this page learning who He is. Now use what you learned. Call upon Him. That is not an afterthought. It is the entire point.

"Whoever does not ask Allah, Allah is angry with him."

— Sunan at-Tirmidhi [4]

Read that carefully. He is not annoyed when you ask. He is displeased when you don't. Every other being in your life gets tired of your requests. Allah ﷻ wants more of them. Du'a is not a burden on Him. It is worship. It is the act of turning to the only One who can actually help, and admitting that you need Him. That admission is the whole relationship.

Du'a comes from three places. From the Quran, where Allah ﷻ Himself teaches you the words to say. From the Sunnah, where the Prophet ﷺ shows you how he spoke to his Lord. And from your own heart, in your own language, in your own words, about the things only you and Allah know. All three are valid. All three are worship. You do not need to speak Arabic to talk to the One who created every language.

"And your Lord says: Call upon Me, I will respond to you."

— Surah Ghafir (40:60) [Q2]

From the Quran, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) taught you how to ask: "Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."[Q3] From the Sunnah, the Prophet ﷺ taught you: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from inability and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from the burden of debt and the overpowering of people."[5] And from your heart, tonight, before you sleep, you can simply say: "Ya Allah, I need You." That is enough. He is Al-Mujeeb, the Responsive. He is already listening.

Pause & Reflect

You now know 99 of His Names. You know He is Ar-Rahman, Al-Ghaffar, Al-Mujeeb, Al-Wadud. You know who you are speaking to. The only distance between you and Him is the du'a you have not yet made. Start tonight. Every Name you learn is another facet of the same truth: He is One, and everything flows from that.
